Keerthy Suresh Reveals Why ‘Mahanati’ Success Left Her Without Film Offers for Six Months
Keerthy Suresh reveals why the success of ‘Mahanati’, in which she portrayed legendary actress Savitri, was followed by six months without film offers, and how the unexpected break affected her career and financial stability.
In a conversation with News18, Keerthy Suresh opened up about her life after ‘Mahanati’ and explained how the film changed the way filmmakers perceived her acting abilities. According to the actress, the industry began looking at her differently, with expectations that she would take on more substantial and performance-driven roles than the characters she had played previously.
“It’s very funny. I believe that I wasn’t getting film offers because people were confused about where to place me. After ‘Mahanati’, they couldn’t see me through the same lens that they were earlier seeing me with. They knew that they had to bring something meaty to me. It was a nice feeling and I took it in the right way,” she said.
While the lack of immediate offers gave her an unexpected break, the actress acknowledged that the situation eventually raised concerns about her financial security. Having worked continuously for several years, she felt she needed time away from her demanding schedule. However, the break became more complicated when she realised that her finances were being affected.
“First of all, I needed a break at that time because I was working back-to-back. In a way, I was happy until I realised that my financial stability was going for a toss. But in those six months, I started doing nicer things,” she recalled.
Before ‘Mahanati’, Keerthy Suresh had primarily appeared in commercial films, often portraying girl-next-door characters with relatively limited scope for performance-driven roles. She admitted that she had not previously taken on many demanding characters that required the depth of performance she delivered in the biographical drama.
“Before Mahanati happened, I was doing a lot of commercial films, where I was playing the girl-next-door — somebody who comes, does a little bit and goes off. It’s not like I had done heavy performance-driven roles before Mahanati,” she said.
The experience of working on ‘Mahanati’ marked a shift in how filmmakers viewed her, even as the change appeared to affect the kinds of opportunities coming her way. Although the six-month period without new offers raised concerns about her financial stability, Keerthy Suresh said she also used the time to explore other activities and take a break after years of back-to-back work.
The actress will next be seen in ‘Akka’, where she will be working alongside -=
